XR7: EarthStrike is a traditional shoot-em-up arcade game (with 5 fun levels) written in Visual C++ with DirectX 9 (but also compiles with v8).

The game depicts three classic gaming styles: Galaxian, horizontal scrolling and vertical scrolling. The game was not written to reflect, in any manner, the state-of-the-art in gaming but rather to demonstrate a complete game built with C++ and DirectX that could be understood by those who are new to game development.

Demonstrated in the game is the use of 3D models rendered on the fly; use of particle systems; a simple DirectX-based GUI; data file parsing; elementary bytecode generation; sprite rendering and other fundamentals of multimedia programming.

MINIMUM PLAYING REQUIREMENTS

Operating System: Microsoft Windows 98, XP with DirectX 8 (or greater); (untested on Windows 95 but may work)
Minimum Memory: 64 megs (untested on lesser systems)
Minimum System Speed: 433mhz (untested on less)
Free Hard Drive Space: approx. 25 megabytes after unzipping (download is approx. 7 megabytes)
Video: 800x600x16 with DirectX 8 compatible video card (required)

The game supports keyboard and joystick controls. Technically, the mouse can also be used but that is not recommended.

Note, if you do not have DirectX 8 (or greater) installed you may download the required DirectX runtime, free of charge, directly from the DirectX section at Microsoft.com. The game was tested under the Standard DirectX Runtime.

Note, a number of users with DirectX v9.0b have reported some problems. Those who have compiled the game under the DirectX v9.0b SDK do not have these problems though. Only those with v9.0b but who downloaded a version that was compiled under a pre-9.0b SDK are reporting these problems. Contact support if you need assistance or need a re-compiled version to test.

SUPPORT AND SOURCE PACKAGE

A fully supported technical package is available for those individuals who would like to learn about game development or simply want access to additional royalty-free source code for commercial and non-commercial projects.

Development Requirements: Same as the above playing requirements plus Visual C++ (v6 or greater) and the Microsoft DirectX 8 (or greater) Software Development Kit (SDK). Note, the SDK is available free from the DirectX section at Microsoft.com.

Development was done only with Visual C++ and compilations were separately done with both the DirectX v8 SDK and the DirectX v9 SDK to ensure compatibility. No testing was done with versions of Visual C++ prior to v6.
